WPS (WiFi protected setup) tries to make setting up devices quicker and easier. It applies to networks which have a password and is a feature of most modern routers. Typically there will be a button on the router with a WPS logo or icon:
That when pressed will turn on "WPS mode" on the router for 2-3 minutes. During this time if you select the network on a device you are setting up, it will connect without needing the password.
The basic idea here is that if you can touch the router, you should be able to connect devices to it (physical security!). Some devices such as printers may even have a WPS button as well, and when you push it the printer will automatically connect to your network if it is also in WPS mode!
WPS being enabled on a router does sometimes cause issues for smart device setup, so if you are a smarthome company with customers running into initial setup issues connecting to the router, you may want to instruct the customer to turn off WPS entirely in their router settings (or do it yourself using RouteThis Proxy!)
